100x100cm, acrylic on canvas, 2014

사건의 재구성 - banding field, 130.3x162.2cm, acrylic on canvas, 2014

53.0x45.5cmx 4, acrylic on canvas, 2013-2014

194X130cm, acrylic on canvas,2012

Boundary Restructure

Jungmin Kim, Director of GAHOEDONG60

October 2013. The world is abuzz with the “Higgs Boson.” The keys to the universe have finally been announced to

the world. Peter Higgs even receives a Nobel Prize for his discovery, something he’d foreseen 40 years ago.

Its incredible wonder even formulated a nickname: “The God Particle.” What inspired this tremendous nickname?

For years, Physicists have studied the “Standard Model” theory that seemingly explains the origin of matter.

However, it contains one, but critical problem: the theory only exists under no gravity and no weight. Therefore,

the “Higgs Boson,” the matter that assigns mass to an elementary particle, must exist. However, the “Higgs Boson”

has neither spin nor electric charge and disappears once it does its job. A physicist even wrote a book called

the “Goddam Particle,” emphasizing the frustration over proving the existence of the particle. Of course, the book’s publishing

company wouldn’t go through with such a crazy title and changed the name to the “God Particle.” The ‘damned’ was promoted

to ‘God’ due to a publishing company’s decision, and the nickname stuck and is still used to this day.

This change of phrasing backed with many millions of dollars in funding and countless hours of scientists’ hard

work was able to show the Higgs Boson’s true colors. With this happening, humans have now been ‘graced’ with

“God’s Particle”, the origin of all matter. However, searching websites or reading articles about the “Higgs Boson”

makes me wonder. Can the “Higgs Boson” think? Does it decide the quantity of its mass by itself? Can it control

the ways to give particle mass? Of course, it doesn’t descend to the Earth, assign masses of particles then disappears

like God. The degree of the energy interchanging between the particles decides the quantity of the mass.

(Actually, I’m not a scientist, so I can’t vouch for this myself.) Fortunately, there’s a work of art that can offer some

inspiration. Hong Ji Yeun’s <Higgs Garden> is just that.

Deep, blue space. The sun on the left, the moon on the right like the natural universe. The screen shows a beautiful

blooming peony, symbolizing wealth and honor. The sun and moon’s coexistence are anything but definite.

The dazzling gleam clouds even the judgment of night and day. But focus, and carefully watch the leaves around

the peony. Small birds are cleverly camouflaged in the leaves. The birds don’t show themselves when I’m simply

looking at the screen. But, as if I’ve become a Higgs Boson, once I start focusing and recognizing these birds,

they reveal themselves. The kinetic energies of the animals, plants, and the entire universe flows within the narrow

boundaries and the dreamlike color, and eventually concentrates with a clear awareness of its original figure.

Some may call this an optical illusion but our artist calls this moment the <Higgs Garden>, and gives us the role of

both a ‘viewer’ and ‘concentrator.’ Focus on the hiding birds. Suddenly, everything changes. The birds are secretly hiding

and staring at us. Perhaps they are the observers, the ones watching us, recording the true histories of the universe.

Through the work <A Case Restructure - Banding Field>, the artist tries to express the phenomenon that the energy

spread equalizes at first, then alters into an unstable, ever-moving state. Flocks of fishes and birds are paddling idly

in the pond-bloomed lotus. Strangely they’re all moving towards the same direction. Their concentration is raising the mass!

Look at their bent-neck posture: perhaps they’re here to eat. Quite simply the balance of the energy can be broken.

Even without a tremendous idea such as a “divine will,” we can simply observe, watch and concentrate and make a case

for the universe. Perhaps this is a hint – the case is not being captured, per se. Rather, it is being created from the artists’

purpose from a breadth on a canvas attempting to show the universe.

These observations are not limited to the most omniscient observers; in fact, anyone can notice if they put their mind to it.

In meditation, there’s a key exercise of self-searching involved - looking at oneself in an objective manner. In this case,

one must be an observer. One goes into a mode of isolation, stopping all thoughts and feelings and consider ‘oneself’ in

one silent flow of energy. It’s as if one doesn’t exist as a property of mass. However, we as humans are alive and thinking;

it’s difficult to retain this perspective. This is the same principle as the Higgs mechanism. Once focused correctly,

the phenomenon of the “omniscient observer” is broken and one views themselves from the perspective of ourselves.

At this point, it is natural. The short intermission of judgment is the moment of scattered energy gathered into one.

Humans, however, have the desires to rationalize each other’s differences to separate the difference between you and me,

and such have created spatial boundaries with differences between ‘nation’ and ‘nationality’. We’ve made temporal

boundaries such as past, present, and future to control energies of every changing moment. Conflicts, successes bring us

together, writing the history books as we go along the path of history. We can’t say these are absolute truths. Even if we

argue that a taxidermied tiger is alive, it is just the scene of a tiger. And these events are all etched in the book of history.

Withstanding these qualities humans have regarded these boundaries as truth, and as our shameful history repeats itself

these memories will continue again and again.

The artist Hong Ji Yeun talked about the story about ‘memory’ at the solo exhibition <Boxing Memory>, 5 years ago.

A memory, recorded and adapted into a story, would become truth and eventually history. “These works are the expressions

of deep feelings of doubt that are revealed truth from the consensus and a compulsion of forced memories,” she said.

It seems like she is attempting to confess the contradictory actions of humans with this work. Perhaps it’s trying to look at

the era of folk painting from a modern perspective by asking “How about trying this painting in another way?”, comparing this

formal aspect with the contextual aspect of restructuring the story yet retaining the ‘memory’ of it. Before assigning a folk medium,

the artist constructed space in the work. The work uses boxes to create a sealed area, then by reconstructing into a larger area

she was able to construct her own boundaries, releasing artificial energy. Now, she's restructuring the 10-year period of the folk

painting works and the earlier 10-year period of installation artworks. This is a culmination 20years worth of concepts that the

artist has struggled and pushed through, the reconstruction of a long period of work.

Moving from space into screen, the restructured boxes in the series <Tentatively titled, the Bachelor Pad> are crossing

more actively between objectivity as a viewer and subjectivity exposed when the energy is concentrated. The artwork

<part 2-1>, which captured the experiences and events at a time when she was traveling around the world, expresses her

own traces that pass over different lands and cultures by using traditional, cultural icons of these different countries.

The cases are connected by a small hole, but from farther away, we can see the landscape of our entire lives. On

<part 2-2>, the peach, which symbolizes eternity, keeps its individuality in the each separate box space. However, on a

bigger scale, this is reassembled into a universe. By restructures scenes like this, the artist crosses between the concepts

of 'boundary' and 'definition of a boundary' that has been trapped and offers a new perspective to the fragments of the

case. At the process of focusing one's eyes(Framing) and then analyzing and keeping those things in her mind(Stuffing),

she models her own little universe.

Even the soil of a skyscraper built with even the slightest doubt of collapse is the thin skin of liquid right above the mantle.

The sky has an atmosphere that separates the earth from outer space but pinpointing the exact location is actually quite

difficult. This atmosphere has the power to destroy and re-establish our proud human civilization; it is like a glass castle

on the sands waiting to be washed away. Almost everything that we know as truth is just a temporary phenomenon in the

enormous boundary of cosmos, and just a momentary instant in the concept of eternity.

Perhaps humans make drama; compose and formulate their own meanings with the things that happen around them, and

by analyzing these meanings call what they see “history.” The artist Hong Ji Yeun suggests that by restructuring cases their

boundaries makes us question ourselves, “What is truth?” And if we look closely and focus again, we can awake the other

beings that inspect us. The beings of space are the mirrors that shine back at us, projecting another image of us.

What do you think? This is what I’ve formulated to find the answers to the silly questions regarding the existence of “me”

and to answer the wise man’s prompt of “face the moment,” the message you should be asking yourself.
