PLAY TIME
다나 카펠리안 작가는 2011년 가회동60에서 Serendipity 라는 주제로 일상의 물건이나 장면 속에서 포착한 아름다움을 이야기 하는 작품을 선보인 바 있다. 이번 2013년 전시에서 그는 PLAY TIME이라는 주제로 한층 더 심화된 작품을 보여준다.
아이의 상상과 어른의 환상을 바탕으로 한 행동 사이의 경계에 주목하고 있는 이 작품들은 상상과 현실을 넘나들며 달콤하면서도 시원한, 묘한 감성을 불러일으킨다. 이러한 감성은 보는 사람의 몫으로 남겨두며 현인의 글귀와 사전적 정의만을 남겨두어 더욱 여지를 준다. 원색의 바탕에 프레임을 디아섹(아크릴 유리표면의 facemounting)으로 처리하여 투명한 듯한 작품의 표면이 작품 자체와의 간극을 유지하며 그의 의도를 극대화 시키고 있다.
작품의 주제에서와 같이, 우리는 작품을 단순한 게임처럼 즐길 수도 있고 그 너머에 있는 인간 본연의 심성에 대해 탐구해 볼 수도 있다. 그의 작품을 통해 이러한 의도를 대수롭지 않게 드러내 보이는 작가의 태도와 작품에 매료되는 시간을 가져본다.

Artist Dana Kapelian had an exhibition in GAHOEDONG60 as a subject “Serendipity” in 2010. In that exhibition she want to show beauty of common things in her artworks. In this time, in 2013, she shows a deeper meaning with the title “PLAY TIME”.
The artworks are about the boundary between a child’s imagination and an adult fantasies and actions. We can make a sweet and chic, weird feeling between the imagination and the reality and the artist make it in the eyes of the beholder as explaining of wise man’s phrases and dictionary definitions just. The artworks background is primary color and make the frame with Diasec (facemounting process on acrylic glass), it looks like pellucid because of the face. It makes maximize her intention with keeping a gap within the face and the artwork.
As the subject of the artworks, PLAY TIME, we can just enjoy them or try to seek the truth of human nature’s hidden side. I’m attracted by the artist and the artworks because she would show so cool manner from the profound meaning of the life with her artworks.

Artist Note
The images are about the boundary between a child’s imagination and an adult’s fantasies and actions. It is all in the seer’s mind. Things can be interpreted as innocent or devious, playful or full of temptation.
This text had inspired me:
In many shamanic societies, if you came to a shaman or medicine person complaining of being disheartened, dispirited, or depressed, they would ask one of four questions.
When did you stop dancing?
When did you stop singing?
When did you stop being enchanted by stories?
When did you stop finding comfort in the sweet territory of silence?
Where we have stopped dancing, singing, being enchanted by stories, or finding comfort in silence is where we have experienced the loss of soul.
Dancing, singing, storytelling, and silence are the four universal healing salves.

The Golden Ass (The metamorphoses of Apuleius)
The plot revolves around the protagonist's curiosity and insatiable desire to see and practice magic. While trying to perform a spell to transform into a bird, to better spy on the decadent deeds of his fellow town’s people, he is accidentally transformed into an ass. This leads to a long journey, literal and metaphorical, filled with in-set tales. He finally finds salvation through the intervention of the goddess Isis, whose cult he joins.

이 작품들은 아이의 상상, 그리고 어른의 환상과 행동 사이의 경계에 대한 것이다. 이것은 모두 보는 사람의 마음에 달려있다. 순진하거나 앙큼한, 장난기 어리거나 유혹으로 가득한 것으로 설명될 수 있다는 것이다.
이 텍스트가 나에게 영감을 주었다.
샤머니즘을 따르는 많은 곳에서는, 낙담하고, 의기소침하고, 우울해져서 상담하러 주술사를 찾아가면, 다음의 네 가지 중 하나의 질문을 받게 될 것이다.

The Golden Ass (황금당나귀: 아풀레이우스의 변신)
이 이야기는 주인공의 호기심과 마법을 보고 익히고자 하는 끝없는 욕망을 중심으로 전개된다. 자기 마을 사람들이 타락한 행동을 하는 것을 더 잘 살펴보기 위해 ‘새’로 변신하는 주문을 실행하려다, 그는 실수로 당나귀로 변하게 된다. 이로써 긴 여정을 갖게 되는데, 실제적으로 발생된 사건과, 은유적으로 표현된 사건들로 이야기를 꾸며간다. 결국 여신 이시스의 조정을 통해 구원을 받고, 그는 그녀를 숭배하는 종교집단에 들어간다.
