Imagine a girl, a fragile and sensitive 14-year-old girl, dropped off in the middle of Mother Nature where naive woodland and perpetual icecap surrounds. How would the girl feel? Thereupon, artist Kim's life fell into a deep rampant forest of Canada and was demanded independence at such a young age.

"The vivid visualization of catastrophic, yet sedate collisions between the naive, innocent little girl and the solemnly magnificent Rocky Mountains."

It is hard to understand Hyesung Kim's work without her earlier Canadian life that had almost been traumatic. Kim's adolescence lacked the metropolitan decadence where full of people and full of stimuli manure the growth of one's ego. Rather, she stood in the awe against the serene nature and subconsciously questioned the vague existential doubts; "Nature and I, the world and I, and ultimately, what is I against the universe"

Kim proposes the existential questions by persistently allowing only two objects through her viewfinder; the bare naked herself and the space and environment that surround her.

Kim keeps on her journey of self-examination even when she left the great woods and high mountains of Canada to the mass crowd and densely stood skyscrapers of Manhattan, New York City. The busy urban life of New York City, lead her to perceive the inevitable correlation between outsiders and herself.

Kim remarks, "People fear truly displaying themselves in front of the others."

"The significance of taking off the clothing is to strip down all the layers that oppressed oneself and become bare to find true identity. It is a rather dangerous adventure that one throws oneself to the world."

Nevertheless, when Kim's endeavor of manifesting herself wholly to the world gets combined with the work of 'photography', it becomes extremely restricted into a devoted private ritual.

"The reason I work exclusively and strictly disallow others to come into my work it to be emancipated from the gaze of others. From the sole confrontation of camera and I, I can at last be free of distorted prejudice of others."

"The none-intervened-rendezvous of camera, I, and the space, is something that can never be interfered and it is purely of my own."

New York City disgorged deceptive distortions, and disharmony of premature egos. This psychological trauma lead her to take on a dualistic methodology. First, she disclosed the reality, and withdrew from the society. Then, she objectified her body and allowed only herself to confront her soul. Then Kim chooses photography as the only means of connection to the outside world.

Number of female artists practiced their bare body to portray the gender bounded femininity. This could be the weapon against the world and on the other hand, something bothersome to be destroyed. Kim escapes from her earlier limited subject of vividly outlined subject such as self-nudity and femininity. Instead, she takes on a route of the neuter gender. Kim's deconstruction starts from gender and continues to 'female and I', 'space and I', and finally into 'myself and I'.

As time floats across, unnecessary embellishment fades away, and the stirring of self-recognition begins. This stirrings of life in light and dark fit rightfully into the title of her exhibition, 'Reverie Excursion". Because when everything loses its purpose, the means of all existence is merely just a night of a dream.

People might ask, “What role do photography take in the 21st century's fine art world?”

To Hyesung Kim, photography is a devoted "Dream maker", and a mirror that keeps reflecting herself in her reverie.

I am eager to discover which journey her photography would take in her future reverie of excursion.
